The Community of Mission in St. Albert

Settled in the 1860s by Métis families and influenced profoundly by Father Lacombe and Bishop Taché, Mission is a vibrant corner of St. Albert that has remained connected to its roots even as it grew over time. The tranquil beauty of the area was first spotted from atop a hill above Sturgeon River, where historical intrigue met with inspiration for this unique neighbourhood - home now to the city's oldest building: an iconic chapel built in 1861 that remains standing today amongst quiet hilly streets filled with stories waiting to be told!

Established with a desire to create something special, the mission at St. Albert would soon weather immense trials and tribulations on its way towards becoming an incredible community today. Métis families moved in right away, followed by nuns and orphans not long after - although smallpox then wreaked havoc among these pioneering folk; half of the population was lost to tragedy before they could truly settle into their new home. But what had started as just an idea quickly turned into reality – within a few short years it gained village status, transitioned fully into townhood come 1904…and eventually became the beloved destination we know so well now!

The story of St. Albert is a timeless one, with its roots tracing back to generations ago; where what was originally just prairie and farmland has since then blossomed into the peaceful oasis we now know as Mission. Here, visitors can observe firsthand how schools, homes, infrastructure and even cemeteries were built up over time as history continued to be written in this area - traces that will no doubt remain for years more still yet!

Today, Mission is the vibrant heart of St. Albert, a bustling community full of life and energy that caters to both its young and old alike.
